Mountain Kingsnake
Lampropeltis multifasciata
This elusive and rarely-seen snake is the only tri-colored snake in the park. It mimics the pattern of the venomous coral snake, except the order of the color bands are reversed (red touches black, you’re okay jack). Smaller than California Kingsnake. Alternating black, red, and white bands, black face. Colors and banding are highly variable. The similar looking, venomous coral snake is not found in southern california. Found in riparian habitats, canyons with talus, rocky outcrops, nearby permanent water sources. Very sensitive to moisture, so often found in the same general area as Two-striped Garters. Active year round, most active April - May, otherwise surface activity is limited.
