This snake gets it's name from looking like a braided whip, but is also known as 'Red Racer'. Found in open chapparal habitat with sandy soils. The Santa Monica Mountains is not the typical habitat for this species, but Malibu Creek is one of the best places to find them in the mountains. Active year round, most active March - May.
